More NICU fun

While Daddy was trying to keep things normals for the boys-while still bringing them to the hospital every day-Mommy was heading down to the NICU every three hours for the scheduled maintenance of Brownie. It seems that the house might have been a bit like a frat house as the boys got to go to Walmart to spend $5 everday on toys. Daddy even taught them such quaint phrases as "Mommy, welcome to the gun show" complete with requisite bicep kisses.

In the meantime we spent lots of time memorizing everything that Brownie did so that we could tell the boys all about it. At this time it was very challenging for them to understand why they couldn't come in and see her. Lucky for us, we had visits from Mamina, Grandpa Bill and Papa Nick to help distract the boys.

We had many visitors to the NICU, too. Nana Pat came and so did Papa Bob & Nana Shelby. Needless to say, we were kept busy.

And slowly but surely Brownie started to get strong enough that we began to think we'd actually get out of there.

The boys were great at helping Mommy pass the time in between trips to the NICU. They gave me a room close to the newly remodeled newborn nursery (3rd floor) because they didn't want me walking very far only to have Brownie moved to the NICU (2nd floor). I stole a wheelchair and kept it hidden behind a curtain in my room so I could wheel myself down when there was time. But most of the time I walked just because it got me out of bed.

Ending up in the NICU

Pretty quickly in the newborn nursery they realized that she was not holding her temperature well on her own. So they put her in an isolette. After Mommy's stuff was started she convinced someone to bring her down to the newborn nursery (who can sleep after so much excitement) and since she was no longer allowed to hold Brownie (the boys nickname for their sister), she just sat by the isolette watching.
Early in the morning her OB (and the best doctor ever) came down to the newborn nursery and brought her back to her room to give her an exam. The bloodwork was looking like things were going back to normal. A little while later, the pediatrician came in and mentioned that Brownie's initial bloodwork indicated that she had an infection that would have to be treated with some antibiotics (You should have heard the skepticism from the three resident microbiologist Grandparents...). Unfortunately, they only handle newborn IVs in the NICU...
So away we went...Lucky (depending on how you look at it) Mommy & Daddy are ol' pros at that scene and we knew how things would go. She still wasn't holding her temp very well and she wasn't eating well, so she earned herself a gavage tube. And, just like her brother, she pulled it out on a regular basis.

Surprise!!

As usual, some amazing force in the universe has been looking out for us. On April 30th, Providence found mommy in a place where there actually was an extra substitute teacher in the building. She took him up on his presence in order to get some bloodwork done as it was clear that her body was starting to dislike being pregnant.

After a long day that included a swim meet as well as a two hour stint at the local Labcorp, mommy decided it would be a good idea to go over to the hospital. Something just didn't feel right. Three hours (and even more bloodwork...) later she met Dr. Jack and it was clear that for better or worse, our new arrival was going to arrive even earlier than planned (Had Mommy known that her regular OB was to arrive early in the morning, she would have refused to sign the paperwork, but somehow no one would tell her who the next OB was and there was rather a lot going on).

Dr. Jack originally (at 10:10 pm) said that he wanted to take the baby as soon as possible. However, as Mommy explained to him that Daddy was at least 45 minutes away, he agreed to wait. It gave him a little bit of time to practice his big line, "It's a ......". He was rather excited that he would get to make such an announcement as apparently it doesn't happen much in his line of work anymore. Labor & Delivery was a little busy that evening and so we didn't get in to take care of business until 12:12 am. However, we were rather excited when...

Dr. Jack got to tell us: "It's a girl". She reminds Mommy a lot of a t-shirt given to mommy as a birthday present once. It said "Small but Mighty". Her name is Bronwynn ("fair-skinned raven" Mairead ("pearl" and either Mary or Margaret-both of our Moms in Gaelic).

She weighed in at a whopping 4 pounds, 1 ounce and she was 16.5 inches long. The nurses in the delivery room were joking about sending her home with Daddy that night as it was clear that Mommy was going to need some time to get her body back to normal. Daddy got to bring her over to Mommy and it was clear watching him walk around the room that he was already wrapped around his finger pretty tightly.
She went directly to the Newborn nursery and Mommy went to recovery. Several hours later she came to Mommy's room. She spent as much time with Mommy as possible until Mommy's special "anti-seizure" medication came to Mommy...this stuff makes Mommy a little less than lucid and so then it was best for her to head back to the newborn nursery....To be Continued.

Easter eggcellence

We all ended up being a bit ill right before Easter this year, so we spent the day at home. The weather was not the best and so we skipped the Easter egg hunt outside and did one inside instead. Brody made Easter bunny ears at school. However, we had a bit of a catastrophe as we went to pick up Brady and they were lost to a major wind storm. After Mommy tried chasing the ears through two parking lots (yes, really) mommy decided that the best course of action was to go home and make two NEW sets of ears.
We were also really lucky because the Easter Bunny did not only include some treats for all of us who are in the house currently, but also brought a new Easter basket for the new kid who hasn't arrived yet. Mommy & daddy decided to enjoy that on behalf of our future arrival.

Brady turns 4!!

It hardly seems possible that four years have passed since Brady's arrival in our life. I still think of him as my baby which is a little tough seeing as I am expecting a new baby. I think that Brady is the most excited about our new arrival. He is so excited to prove himself as a big brother and I have no doubt that following Brody's excellent tuteledge he will be an amazing big brother-just like Brody.
Brady couldn't wait to get "G Force" for his Birthday. He describes it as "the best movie he's ever seen". I hope that this is because he really hasn't seen that many movies. Shortly after he opened this package, he watched the movie three times in a row.

Brady's birthday was on a Thursday which is a little bit of a hectic day for us. So we rearranged our schedule and Brady got to spend Thursday with Daddy and Friday with Mommy. We had a lot of fun and got ready for his party at Round Table pizza. Of course, we had to pick up Brody early because Brady missed him so much. It warms my heart that they love each other so much!

Brady also wore his favorite shirt on his birthday. Brady has taken great pride in his wardrobe this year. He is very good about picking out his own clothes in the mornings and he is also the earliest riser in the house. And he still loves he racetracks.

His birthday party this year was all about the Scooby-Doo. The tie-dye cake was wonderful and it the purple food coloring stayed on our fingers for severals days. It was great!

Mea culpa

Well, between the flood at Christmas and re-locating our spare bedroom into the living room a couple of times to repair the damage caused by said flood, we did not get thank you cards done following our Christmas extravaganza.

Instead, please look and see the joy on the kids faces as they enjoy the great number of gifts that they received this year.

And please know that we loved and appreciated all of them. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts...and in the public forum in our blog.
